Tactical Medical Support (TAC-MED)

This course is currently only available for group bookings.

TAC-MED is not a First Aid course:  These immersive scenario-based training courses are methodologies using evidence-based, life-saving techniques and strategies for providing the best trauma care on the battlefield or civilian tactical environments.

Evidence Based Learning

The foundation of this course is based on current evidence-based best practice guidelines including:

  • Defence Medical Services Clinical Guidelines for Operations

  • The Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care

  • The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma

  • The Royal College of Surgeons Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care

Course Content

TAC-MED course teaches Responders how to respond to and care for patients in a civilian tactical environment.

The course presents the three phases of tactical care:

  • Hot Zone Care that is rendered while under attack or in adverse conditions - Care Under Fire

  • Warm Zone Care that is rendered while the threat has been suppressed but may resurface at any point - Tactical Field Care

  • Cold Zone Care that is rendered while the casualty is being evacuated from the incident site - Tactical Evacuation Care

The 16-hour classroom course includes all new patient simulations and covers the following topics:

  • Complete coverage of the MARCH assessment;

  • Haemorrhage control including immediate action drills for tourniquet application and wound packing;

  • The administration of Methoxyflurane (Penthrox)

  • Strategies for treating wounded Responders in threatening environments;

  • Techniques for dragging and carrying victims to safety; and

  • A final tactical simulation.

Developed in line with the Tactical Combat Casualty Care and Defence Medical Services Clinical Guidelines for Operations together with proven operational experience and the latest evidence-based models of best practice, these courses reframe our conventional understanding of the application of First Aid and treatment of casualties in a traditional low-risk urban or domestic setting to ensure the greatest possible outcome in high-risk and hostile situations.
